  • John Porter Sampler

    John Porter uses film as visual art, much like painting or sculpture,. Most of his 300 films are silent, very short and made in series, such aas landscapes, cityscapes, popular rituals, crowd documentaries, local histories, toy stories and “Camera Dances” in which he performs for the camera. Unlike most filmmakers, John shows his original films (no copies) and incorporates performance into the exhibition by miming in front of the screen, moving a hand-held projector around the room, and talking with the audience during the his films. He has been invited to many university film production classes to demonstrate a different way to approach filmmaking and exhibition. Porter’s films exploit and celebrate the unique qualities of Super 8 film and equipment – simple, economical, accessible, inconspicuous, portable, fun, spontaneous, intimate and expressive. Some of his films are “experimental,” often using pixilation (a form of live animation), but all of his films are better termed “personal” because of their subjects and the fact that everything (writing, designing, acting, shooting, editing, sound recording and projecting) is done by the same person.   • Buoyant

    “Buoyant” is a charming experimental documentary which interweaves the stories of the Padded Lilies – a troupe of fat synchronized swimmers – and Archimedes – the Greek mathematician obsessed with floating bodies and inventor of the “Drystroke Swimulator.” It leaves us with the exuberant possibility of a fat body that literally and culturally rises, like cream, to the top.     “her carnal longings” is a beautiful meditation on the human body and the film medium at a time when the futures of both are in question. Using the “emulsion lift” technique on 16mm film, sections of emulsion were lifted off, torn up or smudged, and then re-adhered. In combination with digital video technology, the filmmaker creates an intricate analogue/digital weave which explores both the body’s and the film’s surface. The film emulsion wrinkles, rips and dissolves – reminding us that it, like human flesh, is fragile and perishable.

    After being left at the altar, Madelyn (Dawn Herriott) decides she must take control of her own destiny. She convinces her best friend, Lydia (Brigitta Dau), to help her “gather information” on a potential mate. The film begins as the two venture out on a weekend stakeout, living out of a tiny Chevy Sprint. The novice “stalkers” must make do with their limited resources: binoculars, headphones, and baby monitors serving as a bugging system. With everything in place, they stumble upon a startling discovery which changes their whole plan… Director: Jesse Weathington Jr.

    Brian Stockton’s series of eccentric autobiographical short films continues with “That’s My Wonderful Town,” an ode to Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada – past, present and future. The Supers return for part 2 with another stunning musical score, and the filmmaker’s son, Keaton L. Stockton, appears as “Kindergarten Brian.” “Saskatchewan Part 2” also features special appearances by Prince Edward, the Earl of Wessex, and David Letterman’s gas pump jockey, Dick Assman. Filmed in glorious 35mm Panavision®, this is Saskatchewan like it has never been seen before.
