  • The Blacksmith

Shot in a traditional blacksmith shop, where the blacksmith uses coal for his fire, we hear as much as we see how this art is executed. There are bumps and grating sounds, sounds of a very hot fire, hammer sounds…and the vivid reds, yellows, blues and white of a very hot fire, along with the earth colors of most of the tools and machines. Finally, from time to time, we hear the blacksmith himself explain the essentials of the process and near the end, we even catch a brief glimpse of his face.

  • Evolution: A Theme with Variations

“Evolution: A Theme with Variations” is a journey through music and art from the Renaissance to the present. We hear and see a musical theme performed in stylized examples from six eras – Renaissance, Baroque, Classical, Romantic, French Impressionistic, and Twentieth Century – accompanied by images of art and architecture selected from works created in these eras. A final variation combines all the above styles as it retraces its path back to a Renaissance bacchanal or dance. Another facet of creation appears throughout the film: the musician and his/her instrument, often shot alone, surrounded by darkness, to symbolize that art consists of many moments or sounds, transformed into music; each is a unique part of the whole. Instead of a voice over, which would disrupt the experience of listening closely to the music, a study guide is available to give viewers a step-by-step understanding.

After learning about the LGBT community, Joshua decides to leave home on his Rumspringa. He arrives in the city and sets out to find the boy that told him about the community, Austin. He starts his search in a gay bar. But instead of finding Austin, he makes a new friend in Marrick who decides to help Joshua with his transition to city life. He starts Joshua off with the most basic of Internet practices: pornography. The next day he uses Marrick’s idea of texting Austin with the number he provided. He gets a hold of him and they decide to meet at a club that night. Joshua gets a hold of Marrick to help him prepare for the evening. At the club, Joshua has his first few drinks and starts letting loose. He spends the night dancing until he finally meets up with Austin. They share a short dance before Austin makes his move and takes Joshua to the bathroom. They start out at a comfortable pace, but Austin soon pushes Joshua to his limit. But to please Austin, he makes himself continue. After their moment, Austin leaves him alone to mull over his situation.
