Isabelle is a thirty-three year old female boxer from the south shore of Montreal. As an athlete, she inevitably relies on her body. The body is like a mechanical engine. Her gym, a cold building made of steel and concrete, is located in the industrial area of an anonymous and typical suburban town. Her body, made of flesh and muscles, is continually pushed to its limits. French with English subtitles.

In it is a lament for a past not fully recognized and a tradition that escapes the reader’s present situation…the longed for marriage groom which he will never be. Humorous and poignant at the same time, the past coincides in the present like a knife.

Add one part interpretation, 2 parts intent, stir and let simmer. Caution, results may vary: one woman discovers that a recipe is not necessarily the sum of its ingredients. The theme of RECIPE is communication. The project explores the nature of language and the possibility for miscommunication between the speaker and the listener. Recipe tells the story of a woman following a recipe and uses cooking as an allegory for speech. The film uses symbols as elements of language. Each ingredient is paired with a sound that gets mixed into a bowl. When the woman ingests the mixture, she distorts the sound and creates a cacophony unreflective of her original intention. RECIPE highlights the gap between intention and understanding, and leaves the viewer to construct his/her own meaning from the mixture of sounds and symbols.
